Playground

Playground is a sculptural work that I created in the industrial environment of the Laufen sanitary factory, as part of a art residency and research project for the Kammerhof museum in Gmunden, Austria.

The word ‘Playground’ refers to this working environment, which becomes a terrain for exploration, knowledge and creation. The work began with a set of discarded polystyrene tools that I found in the factory’s production area. By observing the workers’ daily work and following their gestures, I began to learn about their functionality and their temporality in the production process. These were tools used to level and maintain the regular shape of sanitary products. At first glance, the shapes and colours made these tools seem playful, almost out of context.

I wanted to highlight the beauty and uniqueness of these tools, built by hand by the workers: using the same industrial production process, I moulded the tools to obtain their negative copy. From the negative form of the plaster mould, I recreated the whole shape with liquid clay, the same material originally used to produce the sanitary ware in the factory.

Playground è un lavoro che ho realizzato presso la fabbrica di sanitari Laufen, nell’ambito di una residenza artistica e lavoro di ricerca per il museo Kammerhof di Gmunden, in Austria.

Il termine “Playground” si riferisce all’ambiente di lavoro della fabbrica, che diventa un terreno di esplorazione, conoscenza e creazione. Il lavoro è iniziato con una serie di strumenti in polistirolo scartati che ho trovato nell’area di produzione della fabbrica. Osservando il lavoro quotidiano degli operai e seguendo i loro gesti, ho iniziato a comprenderne la funzionalità e la temporalità nel processo di produzione. Erano strumenti che servivano per livellare e mantenere la forma regolare dei prodotti sanitari. A prima vista, le forme e i colori rendevano questi strumenti giocosi, quasi fuori contesto.

Ho voluto mettere in risalto la bellezza e l’unicità di questi strumenti, costruiti a mano dagli operai: utilizzando lo stesso processo di produzione industriale, ho modellato gli strumenti per ottenere la loro copia negativa. Dalla forma negativa dello stampo in gesso, ho ricreato l’intera forma con argilla liquida, lo stesso materiale originariamente utilizzato per produrre i sanitari nella fabbrica.
